Wind drifting is a different beast than a standard snowfall. When a property sits out in the open with nothing to break the wind, snow doesn't just accumulate - it piles up fast and in places you wouldn't expect. That's exactly what happened here at one of our commercial properties in Grimes.
We always recommend a snow fence for properties like this. It's a simple, cost-effective way to intercept drifting snow before it becomes a problem. But when a customer passes on that option, we're ready to deal with whatever winter throws at the lot. No complaints - just showing up and getting it done.
The drift buildup here was serious. Massive walls of packed snow had formed across open sections of the lot, cutting off access and making the surface genuinely hazardous. We brought in the Kubota SVL75 with a Bobcat-Kage pusher box and worked through it systematically - pushing back the drifts, stacking snow at the perimeter, and clearing the lot surface so it was actually usable again.
Properties in open areas around Grimes and the greater Des Moines metro are especially vulnerable to this kind of drifting. If your lot is exposed and you've dealt with wind drift before, it's worth having a conversation about snow fence installation before next winter. It doesn't eliminate the need for snow removal, but it dramatically reduces the worst-case scenarios.
Our commercial snow removal service is built around being reliable when conditions get bad - not just after a manageable overnight snow, but when a property gets hit hard and needs real equipment and real effort to get back to a safe, functional state.
