Old mulch beds have a way of just looking tired. They fade, they wash out, weeds push through, and before long the whole front yard feels dated. That's exactly what this Altoona homeowner was dealing with - and it's one of the most common calls we get. The fix isn't always complicated. Sometimes it's about pulling the old stuff out, starting clean, and using the right materials.

Here's what we were working with: existing landscaping and mulch beds that had run their course. We stripped everything out and swapped in trap rock - a dark, angular crushed stone that looks sharp, holds its color, and doesn't need to be replaced every season like organic mulch does. It also doesn't float around in heavy rain, which is a big deal here in Iowa. We ran it along the foundation beds, around the tree rings in the front yard, and through the side and back beds to tie the whole property together.

The edging was just as important as the rock itself. We installed stamped concrete landscape edging around every bed - it creates a clean, defined border between the rock and the lawn that holds its shape over time. No plastic edging that shifts and buckles. No bare soil gaps. Just a consistent, finished line all the way around.

We also put in a few new plants to fill out the beds and give the landscaping some life. Trap rock on its own looks great, but pairing it with the right plantings is what makes a yard look intentional instead of just functional. The whole property - front, sides, and back - got the same treatment so nothing feels like it was an afterthought.

The end result is a yard that's genuinely low maintenance and looks put together year-round. No more mulch refresh every spring, no weeds pushing through bare spots, and clean borders that make the lawn look sharp even before it fully greens up.
