Some backyards just work against you. Muddy patches, soggy ground after rain, dogs tracking everything inside - it adds up fast. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. The goal was simple: turn a hard-to-use, messy backyard into something clean and functional that the whole family could actually enjoy.

We went with a gravel-heavy layout throughout the yard, running rock along the fence lines and around the deck area. Concrete edging borders the entire install, which keeps the rock exactly where it belongs and gives every section a sharp, finished edge. No mulch creeping into the lawn. No gravel migrating into the grass. Everything stays put.

The layout around the deck got a curved edging line that follows the shape of the space naturally. It's a small detail, but it makes a big difference in how the yard reads as a finished space versus something just thrown together. The side yard got the same treatment - rock laid tight to the fence with clean edging defining the boundary between grass and gravel.

This kind of setup is genuinely low-maintenance. Rock doesn't need mowing, watering, or replacing every season. For households with dogs especially, it cuts down on the mud problem dramatically. Less mess at the back door, less work on weekends. We still have the front yard to wrap up, so this one isn't completely finished yet - but the backyard is looking sharp.
