This Norwalk yard got a full-property mulch overhaul - front beds, side beds, back beds, all of it. We cut natural edges roughly 3.5 inches deep around every bed on the property, then loaded in fresh black mulch from the ground up. No shortcuts, no skipped corners.

The deep cut edge is what separates a clean landscape from a sloppy one. When you go that deep, you get a defined trench between the turf and the bed - grass has a much harder time creeping back in, and the contrast between the dark mulch and green lawn is sharp and stays that way longer. It also locks the mulch in place so it doesn't wash or spread into the yard after a heavy rain.

The retaining wall on the side of the house was a big part of why the edging had to be right. Those block steps leading up the slope needed clean lines on both sides to look intentional. We followed the curve of the wall and carried that same fluid line all the way around the house so the whole property reads as one cohesive design - not a patchwork of separate little beds.

Black mulch was the right call here. Against the gray siding and the tan block retaining wall, it creates serious contrast. The boulder accents and existing shrubs pop a lot more when the bed material around them is that dark. It's a simple move that does a lot of heavy lifting visually.

A job like this takes a full crew working the whole property at once - that's the only way to keep the edging consistent and make sure the mulch depth is even across every bed. When it's done right, the yard looks intentional from every angle, not just the front.
