Old mulch beds have a shelf life. They break down, shift, and end up looking rough - and on top of that, they need to be refreshed every year or two. This backyard in Johnson was at that point. The beds had run their course, the grade needed attention, and the homeowner wanted something that would actually hold up long-term without constant upkeep.

We pulled out all the old mulch, reshaped the beds, and fixed the grade before anything else went in. Getting the grade right matters more than most people realize. It affects how water moves through the bed, how the edging sits, and how clean the finished product looks. We reused the existing edging where it made sense - no reason to replace what was still doing its job - and then brought in river rock to fill everything out.

River rock is one of those materials that earns its keep over time. It doesn't break down, it doesn't wash away easily, and it doesn't need to be replaced every season. The natural rounded stones also give the beds a clean, finished look that holds up well against the plantings already on the property - the junipers, arborvitae, and ornamental trees all complement the rock really well.

What we ended up with is a backyard that looks sharp from every angle and is a lot easier to maintain going forward. The beds wrap around the fence lines cleanly, the edging creates a crisp separation from the lawn, and the rock keeps everything in place. It's the kind of landscape upgrade that works just as hard as it looks.

A good landscaping job shouldn't just look good on day one. It should be built so the homeowner doesn't have to think about it much after we leave. That's what we were going for here - a clean finish with real function behind it.
